We’ve been to Sumatra! We worked with the teams at the Sumatran Orangutan Society and TaHuKah (Tangguh Hutan Khatulistiwa Foundation) – a local NGO that’s doing incredible work reconnecting forest habitats for Sumatran orangutans and other wildlife.
Our crew – Tony Darbyshire and Andy Pinder from the UK, Geoff Pugsley from Canada and Marcus Nicholson from Australia – went to Indonesia to help train the TaHuKah team in tree climbing, so they can build canopy bridges – special rope pathways up in the trees that let animals move around safely in forests that have been broken up by roads. Orangutans are totally tree-dwellers – they live their whole lives up there – so giving them a way to cross safely without coming down to the ground is a game-changer.
We took three sets of climbing equipment to leave with the team - they now have enough gear for three people to rotate through climbing jobs – setting up bridges and checking canopy camera traps.
To continue to help fund this project, we’re still selling Sawpod-branded neoprene sleeves that fit perfectly over our Spikepods and also some of the special shirts we made for the trip featuring our fabulous sponsors. All proceeds go straight into making this trip and training happen.
